Pain

Evil- morally wrong or bad; immoral: wicked
The story, Fox by Margaret Wild, is about how the friendship of a bird and a dog was made and how it was broken by a sneaky fox. Some may call Fox a cold, evil character. Others may see that Fox is more complex than the word "evil". Fox's loneliness causes him to feel an agonizing pain. I believe that although Fox may seem cold and evil, that's just because he's in pain.
First, Fox seems very villainous throughout the story. For example, Fox separated Magpie from Dog because Magpie and Dog had each other. In other words, Fox saw the friendship of Magpie and Dog and decided to end it. He just left Magpie out in the middle of nowhere. Also, the fact that he made Magpie feel so amazing before leaving her is very wicked and malicious. Magpie, who had a burnt wing, had felt very broken inside, like she was nothing. Fox made her feel like she could fly; like she was complete. Then, he just threw her away like she was trash.
Although Fox seems evil, there's a reason for that. His misery causes him to become vindictive. For instance, when Magpie and Dog relaxed with Fox in the cave, Fox just watched the glee between the two friends. This caused Fox to agonize about the fact that he didn't have what Magpie and Dog had; happiness. Magpie and Dog made each other feel complete, but Fox didn't have a person that could make him feel wanted. Feeling unwanted is painful and that's exactly how Fox felt. Lastly, every time Fox saw the friendship of Magpie and Dog, he was reminded of the pain he felt. I believe that he thought that if the friendship went away, then maybe the pain would. That's why he sent Magpie away.
To conclude, Fox might seem cold, but that's because he's in pain. It doesn't feel good to feel unwanted; like no one cares about you. Even Magpie said, "'He belongs nowhere,'" as if he was unimportant. I've felt unwanted before. It felt like everybody was ignoring me no matter how much I screamed. I just wanted a friend at that time, but there was no one there. That caused me to feel pain. Fox is an example of how pain can grow and transform into hatred quickly. However, friendship is the perfect painkiller.
